Valorant is Riot Games’ 5v5 tactical shooter that blends CS-style precise gunplay with hero-based abilities. Launched in 2020, it has become one of the most popular competitive PC games in the world with a massive professional esports scene. If you are new to Valorant, this guide covers every fundamental you need to start climbing the ranks.

How Valorant Works

Two teams of five compete across 25 rounds. Attackers plant a Spike (bomb) at one of two sites; Defenders stop them. First to 13 rounds wins. Each player chooses an Agent with a unique set of four abilities. However, abilities do not win games alone – precise gunplay is the primary skill separator in Valorant.

The Four Agent Roles

Duelists – Fraggers

Designed to take aggressive 1v1 duels and create space. Best for new players: Reyna (heals and becomes invulnerable after kills – extremely self-sufficient), Phoenix (straightforward fire-based kit), Neon (high mobility, rewarding for aggressive players).

Initiators – Information Gatherers

Gather information on enemy positions and open up sites for entry. Best for new players: Sova (recon arrows reveal enemy positions), Fade (haunt ability automatically tracks enemies), Breach (flashbangs and stuns create entry opportunities).

Controllers – Smokers

Block lines of sight with smoke abilities. Every team needs a Controller. Best for new players: Omen (flexible smokes, can teleport to unexpected positions), Brimstone (easy-to-use smokes via map interface), Harbor (deployable water smokes while moving).

Sentinels – Defenders

Defend sites and gather information with passive tools. Best for new players: Sage (heals teammates and resurrects one ally per round – extremely valuable at every rank), Cypher (cameras and tripwires reveal flanks), Deadlock (barriers block push routes).

Gunplay Fundamentals

Aim for the Head

Almost every gun in Valorant kills in one headshot at full health. Always position your crosshair at head height. Walk around corners slowly so your crosshair arrives at head level before the enemy can react.

Counter-Strafe Before Shooting

Firing while moving is highly inaccurate. Briefly press the opposite movement key to stop instantly before shooting. First-bullet accuracy is the most important skill in the game.

Crouch Sparingly

Crouching reduces recoil but makes your head position predictable. Crouching as a first response to a gunfight usually gets you killed. Advanced players crouch at the end of a tap – not at the start.

Economy System

  • Full Buy – Vandal or Phantom plus armor and key abilities. Buy when you have 3,900+ credits.
  • Half Buy – Spectre SMG plus armor. When full buy is not possible but saving is wasteful.
  • Eco Round – Pistols only or nothing. Save for next round full buy. Charging into rifles with a Classic pistol donates a weapon.
  • Force Buy – Spending everything to steal a round. High risk, sometimes necessary to break a losing streak.

Vandal vs Phantom

Both cost 2,900 credits and are the best rifles in the game. The Vandal one-shots at any range but has higher recoil – better on open maps. The Phantom is silenced with a more forgiving spray pattern – better in tight corridors. As a new player, the Phantom is more forgiving.

How to Rank Up

  • Play Spike Rush and Unrated before competitive to learn mechanics without pressure
  • Main two or three Agents rather than playing all of them
  • Play with friends – coordinated teams outperform solo queues at every rank
  • Use the Practice Range for 15 minutes of aim warm-up before ranked games
  • Focus on ability combos with your team – smokers covering duelist entries wins rounds at every rank below Diamond

Valorant rewards practice in a way few games do. Find your Agent, learn two maps deeply, and focus on fundamentals over individual highlights. Consistency beats flashy plays at every rank.
