Minecraft remains one of the best-selling video games ever made. Its combination of survival, creativity, exploration, and near-infinite replayability makes it equally compelling for players of all ages. If you are new to Minecraft on PC (Java Edition), this guide will take you from punching your first tree to defeating the Ender Dragon.

Java Edition vs Bedrock Edition

On PC, you have two options: Java Edition (the original PC version, sold at minecraft.net) and Bedrock Edition (available on Microsoft Store, included with Game Pass). Java Edition has the largest mod ecosystem, most servers, and is the version used in competitive play. For pure PC gaming, Java Edition is the definitive choice.

Your First Five Minutes – Surviving Night One

Minecraft worlds are generated randomly. When you spawn, you have approximately 10 minutes of daylight before hostile mobs emerge. Optimal opening sequence:

  1. Punch trees – Left-click a tree trunk to gather Wood Logs. Collect at least 20.
  2. Open inventory (E) – Convert logs to Planks in the 2×2 crafting grid.
  3. Build a Crafting Table – 4 planks in a 2×2 pattern. Place it down.
  4. Craft Wooden Tools – Pickaxe first, then Axe and Shovel.
  5. Mine Stone – Find a hill and mine Cobblestone. Craft Stone tools immediately.
  6. Build a shelter – A simple dirt or wood box is enough for night one. Dig into a hillside if needed.
  7. Craft a bed – 3 Wool from sheep plus 3 Planks. Sleeping skips the night and sets your spawn point.

The Resource Progression

Minecraft has a clear material upgrade path: Wood > Stone > Iron > Diamond > Netherite. Prioritize Iron as fast as possible. Iron tools and armor are the foundation of mid-game survival. Diamond tools are the pre-endgame goal. Netherite (found in the Nether) is the absolute top tier.

Mining for Diamonds

Diamonds spawn between Y levels -58 and -64 in Java Edition 1.21+. Optimal strategy: dig a staircase to Y=-60 (check with F3), then branch mine – every 3 blocks, dig a side tunnel 10 blocks deep. Bring iron pickaxes, food, torches, and a sword. Never mine straight down. Always have an escape route – lava is everywhere at this depth.

The Nether

The Nether is an alternate dimension accessed by a portal (10 Obsidian in a rectangle, lit with Flint and Steel). It is dangerous but essential:

  • Blaze Rods – Drop from Blazes in Nether Fortresses. Required to make Eyes of Ender to find the End Portal.
  • Ancient Debris – Rare ore at Y=15 that smelts into Netherite Scrap. The best gear material in the game.
  • Danger – Ghasts shoot fireballs. Piglins attack unless you wear Gold armor. Never enter without full Iron armor minimum.

Defeating the Ender Dragon

  1. Collect 12 Eyes of Ender (Blaze Powder plus Ender Pearl each).
  2. Throw Eyes of Ender in the air – they travel toward the nearest Stronghold. Follow until one shatters; dig down there.
  3. Find the End Portal room in the Stronghold. Place Eyes of Ender in the frame (12 slots).
  4. Gear up: full enchanted Diamond armor, Diamond Sword with Sharpness, Bow with Power and Infinity.
  5. In The End: destroy all Ender Crystals on the obsidian pillars first – they heal the Dragon while active.
  6. Once crystals are gone, attack the Dragon when it perches on the central fountain. Target the head for full damage.
  7. The Dragon has 200 HP. A well-enchanted Diamond Sword kills it in 15-20 hits on the perch.

Minecraft rewards curiosity above all else. The Ender Dragon is just the beginning – after defeating it, the End Cities contain Elytra wings and Shulker Boxes that open up a completely new phase of the game.
